White Grub Prevention

Weed Man wants to remind you that NOW is the time to prevent grub damage from impacting your lawn this fall.

Summer has arrived at last and most people are getting ready to celebrate the 4^th of July with family and friends…and maybe taking in some much needed, warm weather vacation time. With all of that going on, who can blame you for not thinking about white grubs on your lawn?

At Weed Man, we never stop thinking about lawn care issues, especially at this time of year when we like to remind our customers about preventative white grub applications. Taking action now will ensure there is no possible damage to your turf this fall.

During my cross-country travels over the last few weeks, I have certainly noticed a large number of adult beetles flying around at dusk. This is a good indication that they are now breeding and laying their eggs in the turf, which can lead to significant damage come fall. Once hatched, beetle larvae (a.k.a. white grubs) mature and chew on the roots of grass plants. Applying a preventative grub control now will act like an insurance policy for your lawn, preventing future damage from both the grubs themselves and from animals, such as skunks and raccoons, digging on your lawn for their next meal.

You’ve heard the Benjamin Franklin axiom that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and this is especially true when it comes to controlling white grubs in your lawn. There is no predicting whether or not you will see any grub damage if you decide to roll the dice, and sometimes one lawn will see damage while another right beside it somehow escapes injury. In the end, however, paying for a preventative application now could save you significant money in repair costs down the road. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen lawns practically destroyed from grub damage, and the only solution is to reseed or sod the lawn. This can be an expensive and time consuming endeavor.

Is It Too Late to Treat for Grubs?

Q & A with Weed Man’s Turf Care Expert, Chris Lemcke

A very typical question we get at this time of year at Weed Man is “Is it too late to treat for grubs to prevent any possible damage in the fall?” Many times people are away on vacation, have been too busy, or they planned to do it themselves but never got around to booking a preventative treatment. Now they’re calling Weed Man wanting to have a grub control treatment on their lawn.

In the past our answer would have been that it’s too late for a preventative treatment for grubs, since products that contain Imidacloprid must be applied by the end of July or early August at the latest to work effectively. However, in the last few years there have been some new products that are now on the market that can be applied right into September.

Depending on where you live, it may not be a bad idea to treat your lawn, as we have seen some pretty heavy adult flights this summer and the possibility of damage occurring in the fall could be greater than we’ve seen in a while. For those who are looking for a natural way to preventatively treat grubs, a treatment of nematodes should be done in September. Nematodes can be effective but require some extra effort to make sure they work effectively. Nematodes need to be applied to wet or moist soil, watered in immediately, and applied away from the sun, as UV light will kill them. The success of nematodes depends on getting them into the soil and keeping the soil moist so they can travel to where the grub is feeding.
